Borås

Borås is the second largest city in the densely populated Västra Götaland region. 1.5 million people live within a 10-mile radius.

Today, Borås has become a center for textile design, development and trade.

With more than 110,000 inhabitants, Borås is the thirteenth largest municipality in the country. In addition to the central town of Borås, there are 20 urban areas in the municipality. The largest are Dalsjöfors, Fristad, Sandared and Viskafors.

The green city

The city is nestled in parks and green spaces, with nature on its doorstep. Rya Ridges, for example, offers 500 hectares of wild nature and breathtaking views. Around the city there is a ring of open-air farms and clubhouses, good starting points for excursions to forests, lakes and outdoor areas.

In green Borås you can live centrally and still be close to nature. Most residential areas are just minutes from forests and fields.

The center of Borås has been given new life

Borås city center is increasingly vibrant. Sandwalls plats and Knalletorget along Viskan, as well as Hötorget, are places that have recently been rebuilt and have become meeting places with outdoor seating and more.

Stora torget becomes a very special place on Thursday evenings during the summer when thousands and thousands of Borås residents and tourists gather on Stora torget to see artists perform on the large outdoor stage.

Higher education and research

In the middle of the city center stands the university's newly built city campus, which has provided an exciting architectural backdrop to the long parade street Allégatan. The University of Borås has around 12,000 students and programs in areas such as economics, computer science, technology, textiles and design, and libraries. There are also teacher and healthcare programs. The university is a competence resource for the business community, as is SP, the Technical Research Institute of Sweden.

Exciting cultural life

Borås has an extensive and exciting cultural life that, in addition to sculptures and street art, also includes a city theater, a symphony orchestra and about ten museums.

The Textile Museum displays Europe's largest collection of textile machinery that is still in operation. The Borås Art Museum has a magnificent collection of 20th-century Swedish art, and the Borås Museum displays cultural history from the entire Sjuhäradsbygden region. The Borås City Theatre gives around 200 performances a year on its two stages. The Åhaga Experience House, an old locomotive workshop that was given new life in a careful renovation, is the home arena for the Borås Symphony Orchestra.

Center for Design and Commerce

Borås is a trading city and a textile city. For a few decades in the 20th century, Borås was one of Sweden's fastest growing cities, thanks to the then so expansive textile industry. Today, Borås has become a center for textile design, development and trade. Many well-known textile and clothing chains have their headquarters in Borås, such as Hemtex, Gina Tricot, Svea and 8848 Altitude.

The tradition of trade and textiles is united in mail order and e-commerce, where Borås is a Nordic center with well-known companies such as Red Cats-Ellos, Cellbes, Haléns and H&M Rowells. Many millions of parcels are sent from Borås every year.

The habit of handling flows of goods by mail order and e-commerce has given Borås cutting-edge expertise in logistics and distribution. Engineering and electronics are other heavy parts of Borås' industry. Major companies such as Ericsson, Volvo Buses and Parker Hannifin are located here.

Borås' strategic location is one reason why many companies choose Borås. Borås is a hub for four national highways, including the highway between Gothenburg and Stockholm. There are also railways in four directions. With the X2000 you can reach Stockholm in just over 3 hours. Half an hour's drive away is Landvetter Airport.

Experiences

A zoo and a host of sports facilities have made the area around Knalleland a sports and leisure area. There is a skate hall and ice rink, as well as facilities for tennis, floorball, curling, gymnastics, boules and swimming. Here you will find a modern football arena, an athletics arena, an athletics hall, and an outdoor swimming pool, all gathered in one area, integrated with the shopping center and with the zoo and camping as the nearest neighbors.
